Coastal art

After a recent move to the town of Ocean View, Delaware, I have become increasingly inspired by the abundant wildlife and ever changing light and weather of this coastal Delaware region. Great blue herons, angelic white egrets and plentiful geese, ducks, rabbits, fox, hawks and deer enjoy a pond just a few yards from my studio window. They are a constant source of inspiration.

I've will often choose to celebrate these beautiful creatures on large stretched canvases in bold acrylic paint as opposed to my normal medium of choice...watercolor.  I enjoy making these subjects larger than life so that they will command the room in which they will be displayed. Acrylic paint dries rapidly as I am painting. This characteristic enables me to apply layer after layer of paint, building to a crescendo of light and contrast in and around the focal point of the painting. Acrylic paint tends to produce a "contemporary" look and feel due to the sharp edges and delineations of hues within the painting.

The beauty of Delmarva's forests, marshes and beaches will always provide new subjects to explore!
