Leo Kahl has a unique perspective on what makes for an exciting watercolor painting. His first demonstration started with a simple drawing, a minimum of 4 layers with at least 4 values. He advised layering cool colors over warm colors, never warm over cool and to add life to your painting such as people, animals, or birds. He shared his painting tools and showed us the difference in results with a quality mop brush. His workshop included slide presentations interspersed with demonstrations and working the room while attendees painted, providing advice and encouragement as needed. Most importantly, he stressed having fun! With his high energy and love of the watercolor medium, it was impossible not to have fun while learning new ideas in Leo’s class.

Being an incredible watercolor painter AND teacher does not always go hand in hand. Leo Kahl has mastered both.

I have taken 2 multi-day classes from him thus far, and will continue under his tutelage. He weaves his in-depth media presentation with his painting demonstrations to explain his “formula” for us students to create a successful painting.

His formula is easy to follow, erases your fear and hesitation, and awakens your joy through loose creative expression. Watercolor painting can be an unforgiving medium, but with Leo’s step-by-step “formula” it is just so spontaneously freeing and consequently so much fun.
